Carolinians: painting for the future
Gawad Kalinga
On the 22nd of May 2010, the university’s Supreme Student Council gathered more than a hundred volunteers in the spirit of community service.
The activity started with a rendezvous in the Talamban Campus where transportation was provided to take everyone to the site in Liloan to paint houses. Upon arrival, they were met by active members of the Gawad Kalinga – Cebu City who gave a short orientation and helped keep all efforts guided and organized. The Cebu Centennial Lions Club partnered with the council by providing the different coloured paints and brushes.
The sun was merciless, especially towards the brave souls that amicably agreed to paint the bare rooftops. Despite the heat and the exertion, everyone worked with light hearts and a sense of camaraderie. Many had themselves splattered with paint within the hour. Some moved along the ranks of volunteers to bring them snacks and drinks that in the midst of the experience were felt as blessings from heaven. After the hard work, the trip home was delayed for some and added even more to their already great sacrifices of time and effort offered that day.
It’s easy to look around these days and lose hope, wishing that life were like a fairy tale with champions coming around to make things better. It was proven last May 22 that each time volunteers care enough to go beyond themselves and take part of Gawad Kalinga activities, the light of being a champion shines in them. We each have the ability to become champions for others. We each can be champions for ourselves and each other. It is the hope of the Supreme Student Council this year to support the Gawad Kalinga Foundation with, at best, one GK activity every month. It is grateful to all the champions who were present and urge them to continue caring for those in need and continue being champions, not only as Gawad Kalinga volunteers, but also as Carolinians and citizens of our country. When people care, there is hope for the future.

CAROLINIAN STUDENT VOLUNTEERS
It is the aspiration of the Supreme Student Council (SSC) of this year to tap all means by which it can empower as many Carolinians as possible. With twenty-three officers to cater to the more than eighteen thousand students, the disproportion is quite apparent. In the past, this sometimes acted as a hindrance to the achievement of excellence in the quality of projects and activities. To counter this, the SSC has formed the Carolinian Student Volunteers (CSV). This is a group to be composed of Carolinians who are willing to act as warriors by offering their time and abilities to aid the council in serving their fellow students.
The spirit of volunteerism is the inspiration behind this endeavor. This spirit is an indicator of how united a community can become in the face of a test. It is the beating pulse and steady breathing that tells of how the awakening that is social regeneration comes after deep slumber.
Perhaps this written piece lacks the needed resonance and will remain unheard by many, but we are certain that the world and, of course, the University of San Carlos do not lack individuals who cannot help but carry altruism within. No matter what circumstances the Carolinian community finds itself in, the rising of these individuals when the need comes is as perennial as the seasons.
The Supreme Student Council can but rely on the courage and hearts of the warriors who have put it up. This is why it now issues what is both a humble request and a challenge. With the audacity of one who has acquired a good purpose and a way by which to achieve it, earn the title of ‘Carolinian Warrior.’ Become a warrior; become a volunteer.
