The Office of External Affairs announces the arrival of the following national and international guests at the University of San Carlos from September to December 2008.

On September 1 to 2, 2008, Dr. Romero, a Balik Scientist Program (BSP) Short-Term Awardee under the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) with host institution at the University of the Philippines Diliman, will lecture on solar energy harvesting and storage to the faculty of the Department of Physics. Faculty from other departments who have been invited to the lecture include Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Computer Science.
Dr. Romero has expressed interest to return to the University in July 2009 under the Balik Scientist Program to explore further possible areas of research cooperation. Presently, Dr. Romero is a Senior Research Scientist and Instructor at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Maryland, College Park, MD.

From September 4 to November 28, 2008, six Danish teacher education students from Via University College, Aarhus University, will participate in the Seventh Internship Program for Danish Students Teaching Practice. The internship program includes class observation and practice teaching at the University’s Basic Education Department North and South Campuses, USC Montessori Academy, Mandaue City Comprehensive National High School, and Cabancalan National High School. The classes to be visited are English, Mathematics, Social Studies, Arts and Music and Physical Education. The six Danish students will be reporting for a period of two weeks in each local partner school. The annual internship program is organized by the Office of External Affairs in cooperation with Mr. Flemming Hansen, Director of the Channel of Hope (Cebu).

On September 15, 2008, Consul Armi Lopez Garcia visited the Office of External Affairs for the purpose of exploring institutional cooperation between Vladimir State University, Vladimir State University for the Humanities, Russkiy Mir Foundation and the University of San Carlos. Possible areas of cooperation include collaborative research, academic and staff development, exchange of faculty and students, publications, educational and cultural programs, joint seminars, lectures, training and academic meetings. As Russian Honorary Consul in Cebu, Ms Garcia has committed to help promote the University of San Carlos in the Russian Federation.

On September 18, 2008, Ms Cristina Paula Delgado, OJT Coordinator of the University of Batangas, Batangas City, came to visit the Office of External Affairs for benchmarking purposes on internship procedures and industry linkages. The University of Batangas, in cooperation with the University of San Carlos, aims to expand its linkages with industry through a possible deployment of its interns to participating industries in Metro Cebu.

From September 21 to October 2, 2008, the Office of External Affairs will host the Third Sandhurst Teachers’ Social Justice Exposure Tour of fourteen (14) teachers from the Diocese of Sandhurst, Australia. The exposure visit is a 10-day program of activities for a group of Australian Catholic teachers who will visit depressed local communities, attend orientation and exposure on projects of Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation Integrated Development Center (JPIC-IDC), orientation and interaction with non-governmental and religious organizations in the Archdiocese of Cebu, and orientation on the University’s Community Extension Program.
This year’s participants are: Julie Boyer, Anna Gibbons, Rebecca Greenaway, Emma Harrison, Matthew Mann (co-leader), Shannon Mathie (co-leader), Bree McAlpine, Stephen O’Shannessy, Melinda Rankin, Erin Scott, Sarah Tuohey, Gabby Walsh, Kate Williams and Geraldine Worm.

From October 13 to 14, 2008, Dr. Tolosa, another Balik Scientist Program (BSP) Short-Term Awardee under the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) with host institution at the University of Santo Tomas (UST) in Manila, will lecture at the Department of Chemistry on “Fluorescence Sensors for Real World Solutions” and give an introduction to fluorescence and the evolution of low-cost biosensors. The Department of Chemistry is coordinating Dr. Tolosa’s short visit in the University.

From October 23 to November 6, Mattias Karlsson and Emilie Berggren, teacher education students at the School of Education and Communication, Jonkoping University, Sweden, under the tutorship of Dr. Sverker Johannson, will gather data for research on the Philippine educational system through interviewing some 50 school children from private and public schools in Cebu, both low and high income areas, between the ages of 12 to 14.

From December 1 to 13, 2008, the Office of External Affairs will host the Second Bendigo Students Social Immersion Program for high school graduates from three different secondary schools in the Diocese of Sandhurst, Australia. The Immersion Program will consist of a two-week visit and interaction with poor neighbourhoods and orphanages, orientation and exposure on projects of Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation Integrated Development Center (JPIC-IDC) and the University’s Community Extension Program, encounter with local youth groups, including visits and observation of classes at selected high schools in Metro Cebu.

June 30 to July 15, Dr. Gordon, who conducted a Series of Workshop Sessions on Critical Thinking for faculty of the colleges of Arts and Sciences and Commerce and Workshops on English Grammar and Composition in 2006, is a regular visitor to Cebu researching the impact of modernity on social realities of the Philippines. Presently, he is facilitating, on behalf of Professor Meung-Hoan Noh, Ph.D., Chair of the Department of History, the proposed Student Exchange Program in the coming years as well as discussing of the design of a proposed program of technical writing for Korean academics and students.

July 7 to 17, 2008, Dr. Lomax, together with the Office External Affairs, will finalize the proposed University of Iowa Study Abroad Program on Sports and Culture 2009 for sports management students from the University of Iowa, which entails academic course work as well as a study of the manage-ment of sports activities in the region. The University’s Athletics Office and the departments of Physical Education and Sociology and Anthropology will aid the hosting of the Study Abroad Program.
Ms. Hernandez, who will accompany Dr. Lomax, will investigate a further student exchange program with College of Nursing at the Health Science Building on the Talamban Campus.

July 14 to 28, the Office of External Affairs is facilitating the hosting of the Third Hong Kong Sea School Immersion Program Philippines 2008. The Immersion Program, which will involve three instructors and eight students, includes class visitation in Hotel and Restaurant Management, Art Education and Physical Education; heritage and culture tours and marine excursion. Ms. Cheung Ho-sum of Hong Kong Sea School is the Coordinator of the Immersion Program.

July 28, Dr. Heikoop, in cooperation with the Office of External Affairs shall finalize the proposed Summer School Program in Urban Management and Area Development 2009 with both Filipino and Dutch students. The Summer School Program, which will afford students work experience in an international context as well as an opportunity to learn to adjust to a different cultural environment, also aims to initiate an exchange of faculty between Rotterdam University and the University of San Carlos.

August 15 to November 15, 2008, Anniek Epema and Maartje Koet, graduate students of the Faculty of Medicine, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, will be undertaking a research internship at the College of Nursing, University of San Carlos, investigating The Incorporation of Transcultural Nursing in the Academic Nursing Program, Cebu City, Philippines and Preparing Philippine Nurses to Work in Foreign Health Care, respectively.
The graduate research internship is representative of a long-term collaboration with the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, including university management development and research. Ms. Wendelein Tuyp, Communi-cation and Public Relations Officer, Centre for International Cooperation, facilitates the internship program.

August 21, 2008, Dr. Baldacchino, in cooperation with the Office of External Affairs, will finalize details of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the University of Prince Edward Island and the University of San Carlos, which serve as a basis for cooperative programs such as exchange of academic staff for the purposes of teaching and research; exchange or study abroad programs for students: participation in joint seminars, lectures, training and academic meetings; research and consulting contracts; and exchange of research materials in fields of mutual interest.
