Local Resources Media

As a major hub of tourism and trade in southern Philippines, Cebu is fast becoming an international city. Its cosmopolitan character is reflected in the wide variety of media catering to the eclectic tastes of locals as well as the growing community of expats.

Press freedom was one of the civil liberties regained after Martial Law and Filipinos today can choose from a number of broadsheets and tabloids, with national, regional, or local circulation.

Cebu has three locally-published daily newspapers in English, two of which also run tabloids in the local language (Cebuano). A few locally published lifestyle magazines compete with those from Manila and abroad. International newspapers are also sold in selected areas.

Local radio is largely bilingual, with most FM stations broadcast in English and AM stations in Cebuano. Foreign radio channels may also be heard on shortwave.

Free TV offers channels belonging to national networks based in Manila. These include channels under the UHF band. Some of these have spotprogramming in both Cebuano and English. A few Cebu-based stations have emerged in recent years, targeting local and regional audiences with their own programs. All these stations may also be found in the local cable TV, which is already a riot of Filipino and foreign channels.
