Overview
The Department of Nursing (DON) has been educating future nurses especially in the areas of community involvement, instruction, and laboratories for over 40 productive years.
The Department opened as a College of Nursing in 1976 with a five-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing (B.S.N.) program at the former Girls High School campus, now the USC South Campus, during the time when education of nurses shifted from hospital-based to university-based. The following year, a four-year year B.S.N. program replaced the previous program. With the surge of enrollment in nursing in the 90’s, the College was transferred to Talamban Campus. Today, with the shift to the K to 12 system in Philippine education, Department is part of the School of Health Care Professions together with the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics and the Department of Pharmacy.
Student and faculty development are a high priority in USC and the Department of Nursing, which is currently run by faculty members with graduate degrees in nursing, teaching both in the undergraduate (B.S.N.) and graduate programs (Master of Arts in Nursing with major in Clinical Supervision). The focus on student development is demonstrated by active student life in the campus. Involvement in various activities inside and outside the campus, facilitated in partnership with the Department’s student organizations, is emphasized from the time a student is admitted to the Department.
The B.S.N. program is an outcomes-based educational (OBE) program. The Department uses a 3-3 format in the implementation of the program; i.e., theoretical input is delivered for three consecutive days followed by hospital or community exposure in the remaining three days, highlighting the significance of integration of theory and practice. Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center (VSMMC), Cebu City, is the base hospital of the Department. In addition, nursing students also go to Perpetual Succour Hospital, Cebu City Medical Center, Eversley Childs Sanitarium, St. Anthony Mother and Child Hospital, Ramon Durano Foundation for the Elderly, and San Pio Community in Talisay City.
Carolinian nurses who graduated from both the undergraduate and master programs can be found working in some of the most respected hospitals here in the Philippines and abroad.

Today new career pathways for the profession including becoming a Nurse Entrepreneur, Forensic Nurse, Business Process Outsourcing (B.P.O.) personnel, and Hospital Nurse among many others. There are also increasing demands for nurses in Europe, Canada, Japan, and the United States of America.
Facilities and equipment
At the Department of Nursing, the student is the center of his/her learning environment. To build student confidence in hospital exposures, the Department owns a high-end laboratory complete with modern simulators. In the laboratory, students simulate the skills needed in hospital work. What happens in hospital and community works in the future is first experienced by the student in the nursing laboratory and then in affiliated hospitals and communities progressively cued to his/her pace of learning.
