Dr. Custer Deocaris briefs USC on CHED initiatives

Dr. Custer Deocaris, Chief of the Research Management Division of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), briefed USC researchers on CHED’s new strategic directions and various research grants and opportunities on September 28, 2017.

Dr. Custer Deocaris (center) receives a certificate of appreciation from Brenette Abrenica, USC Director of Community Extension Services, and Dr. Elizabeth Remedio, USC’s representative to the CHED Philippine Higher Education Research Network.

Dr. Deocaris returned to the Philippines in 2011 as a Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Balik Scientist. He teaches at the Department of Chemical Engineering at the De La Salle University and the Technological Institute of the Philippines. A graduate of the University of Tokyo, he specializes in aging biology, regenerative medicine, and neuroscience. He received one of the 2013 Ten Outstanding Young Men awards.

Among the highlights of his briefing were the pending CHED Memorandum Orders (MOs) covering graduate research, scholarly publication, travel for conferences, and new research grants. The new CHED MOs carry a stern warning on publishing in predatory journals and participating in predatory conferences.
