The Center for Statistical Services and Training (CSST) of the University of San Carlos is envisioned to be a professional support provider in statistical capacity development applications for research and data-based solutions in Cebu City and the region. The CSST aims to provide statistical services and training to empower USC faculty members and student researchers, as well as external clients, with statistical knowledge and data analytic tools.

Objectives

In particular, the Center’s objectives are to:

  1. Support faculty members and student researchers on the statistical aspects of their research projects through consulting services and customized data-based workshops designed to empower them to manage, analyze, and interpret their data with the aid of statistical software;
  2. Provide continuing professional development on statistical applications, tools, and software packages for research and statistics teachers, and faculty researchers at USC as well as external clients;
  3. Support administrators and managers in data- or evidence-based decision making through analysis of institutional and administrative data arising from university operations (e.g., student enrollment, faculty profile and evaluation data); and
  4. Contribute to the production and publication of research on statistical applications to real-world problems and continuing professional learning on the applications of statistics in research and evidence-based decision making.

Support services offered

The CSST provides support in these areas through face-to-face or online modality.

  • Short-term one-on-one or small group consulting. Members of the USC community (students, faculty, administrative staff,  and administrators) or external clients can request for an initial appointment for guidance and assessment of the statistical aspects of their project or research proposal, with at most two follow-up appointments.
  • In-class statistical support. For USC faculty members handling research classes in senior high school, undergraduate, or graduate programs, they may request the CSST for a resource person to speak on specific statistical methods relevant to students’ research projects or to demonstrate statistical procedures through a hands-on workshop with students using their research data.
  • Customized data-based workshops. For graduates students or faculty researchers who have data at hand for their research projects requiring guidance on how to manage, process, and analyze data to answer research questions or meet pre-specified project objectives, they will be guided with a tailor-made workshop where they will work hands-on with their data using software of their choice with the guidance of our facilitators.
  • Long-term project collaboration. For institutional or externally-funded projects requiring more intensive use of statistical methods over an extended period of time; i.e., exceeding one academic term or semester, clients may request for a collaborating statistician who will serve as part of the research team.

Target participants include Senior High School and tertiary research and statistics teachers, research (thesis or dissertation) advisers, graduate students, faculty researchers, and everyone who uses data in management decision-marking and research.
