USC places 3rd in CESAFI essay writing

Januar Aguja, a first year media communication student, represented the University of San Carlos and placed 3rd in the CESAFI 18th Season: Essay Writing Contest, which was held at the University of Visayas on February 15, 2019. Participants were asked to write a 1000-word essay on prohibited drugs and criminality.

Aguja was trained by Hannah Aranas, a Department of Communications, Linguistics, and Literature faculty member, who honed his essay writing abilities through coaching sessions and discussions on current events.

Asked about his thoughts on being chosen as the University’s representative, Aguja said that he was honored but that it was also a great responsibility, feeling confident for the contest after the training. Aguja wrote about the present generation’s pacifism and how this could remedy complex problems like drugs and crime. “Are we going to be the generation that sees that killing is okay to get things done, or are we going to be the generation that gives human beings another chance in life?” Aguja wrote.
