URC 2024 opens tomorrow

Revolving around the theme Sustainable Futures with a sub-theme related to USC’s 75th anniversary celebration, the 8th University Research Conference (URC 2024) will be held on April 18 and 19, 2024 in Talamban Campus, Cebu City, Philippines with exciting topics lined up.

On-site registration opens at 7:30 a.m. tomorrow, April 18, 2024, at the Fr. Michael Richartz Conference Center in USC Talamban Campus.

Aside from the keynote speakers and plenary lectures (see posters below), URC 2024 has 51 oral research papers and 42 poster presentations. Confirmed keynote speakers include:

  • Maria Luz C. Vilches, Ph.D., Vice President for Higher Education, Ateneo de Manila University, who will speak about the role of higher education in a sustainable future;
  • Michael Lochinvar S. Abundo, Ph.D., CEO of OceanPixel Pte. Ltd. (Singapore) who will speak on how the Blue Economy can be a strategy to achieve the UN SDGs for the Philippines; and
  • Hon. Elmer Francisco U. Sarmiento, Undersecretary, Department of Transportation, who will share his perspective on the Blue Economy from the marine transportation perspective.

Two plenary lectures on sustainability, internationalization, and mobility will be given in the morning of April 19. Dr. Leena James and Dr. Jyothi Kumar from Christ University in Bangalore, India will share their experiences, while former School of Education Dean Dr. Richard Jugar will discuss the Tuning Asia Southeast and CALOHE Asia projects.

Two panel discussions are also slated. The first panel will address Cebu’s outlook for the future with confirmed panelists including Melanic C. Ng (Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry), Riella Mae Christa B. Guioguio (Ramon Aboitiz Foundation, Inc.), and Hon. Jennifer C. Bretaña (National Economic Development Authority RO7) (see poster above).

The second panel will discuss the challenges and opportunities of a future with artificial intelligence (AI). Speakers for this panel include DICT Regional Office VII Director Hon. Frederick DC. Amores, AIM professor Michelle P. Banawan, Ohio University assistant professor Adonis Durado, Ray Business Technologies country manager Gregg Victor Gabison, and UP Diliman professor Prospero C. Naval Jr.

Continuing from their success last year’s URC 2023, the Office of Population Studies Foundation, Inc. will hold another symposium during URC 2024.
