Mosquito researchers visit Institut Pasteur

Biologists Frances E. Edillo, Ph.D. and Rhoniel Ryan Ymbong, M.S. visited Institut Pasteur in Paris, France last May 16-25, 2018 to meet with collaborators, learn experimental setups and techniques, and standardize protocols related to their research projects on mosquitoes.

Dr. Edillo, a Full Professor of the Department of Biology, is the USC program leader of the Aedes Adaptation Genomics program, a research and development collaboration of the Philippine Council for Health Research and Development-Department of Science and Technology (PCHRD-DOST), USC, the University of the Philippines-Diliman, and Institut Pasteur. Senior research assistant Ymbong is involved in a current project entitled “Phenotypic Adaptation and Genetic Structure of Aedes aegypti (L.) and Aedes albopictus (Skuse) under Hot and Cold Conditions in the Philippines.”

Edillo and Ymbong met with Institut Pasteur collaborators, namely Dr. Anavaj Sakuntabhai, Head of the Functional Genetics of Infectious Diseases Unit, and Dr. Louise Lambrechts, Head of Insect-Virus Interactions Unit. They also gave a seminar at Dr. Lambrechts’ laboratory (below), while another lecture on “Interspecific Hybridization with Introgression in African Malaria Mosquitoes” was delivered by Dr. Gregory Lanzaro (Professor, University of California-Davis), who is a former colleague of Dr. Edillo.

They presented preliminary data to other leading scientists working on vector-borne and infectious diseases around the world, including Dr. Anna-Bella Failloux (Arboviruses and Insect Vectors laboratory), Dr. Richard Paul (Infectious Reservoir of Vector-Borne Diseases), Dr. Benoit Arcangioli (Dynamics of the Genome laboratory), Dr. Etienne Simon-Loriere (Evolutionary Genomics of RNA Viruses Group), and Dr. Catherine Bourgouin (Functional Genetics of Infectious Diseases Unit).
