Hospitality studes reap awards at CGC 2018

Students from the Department of Hospitality and Tourism were named as Overall Champion during the biennial Cebu Goes Culinary 2018 (CGC 2018) on September 21-22 held at SM Seaside.

Competing in 21 categories, USC reaped three gold, four silver, eight bronze, and three diploma awards. This is the second straight year that USC was named as Overall Champion in the competition.

CGC 2018 had the theme “Learn to Win” and was organized by the Hotel, Resort, and Restaurant Association of Cebu, Inc. (HRRACI) and is touted to be the most-awaited and biggest hospitality skills competition in the Visayas.

Winning a gold medal in the Table Setting with Floral Centerpiece was the team of Bea Abucayan, Benjho Antipas, and Don Treveño. Kimberly Baula, Dianne Chua, and Abby Vidal also bagged a gold medal in Creative Cake Decoration, while Daniel Arquiola and Alyanna Diu also won gold for the Soup Bowl.

Four silver medals went to the teams competing in Klasika Kulinarya (Chris Bencio and TJ Madula), Chef Wars (Alec Agang-ang, Andrew Cadigal, and Jo Anne Jamero), Food Styling and Photography (Daniel Pierce and Mariane Enriquez), and Cocktail Mixing (Carl Aller).

Bronze medals went to teams competing in The Happy Hour (Meg Dueñas and Kamille Peñero), the Entremetier (Roy Silverio), the Pantry Chef (Thaddeus Millares and Jeffrey Pilapil Jr.), the Apprentice (Joel Catan), Coffee Concoction (Ted Alvero), Plated Desserts (Shanna Salazar and Diane Sayre), Baby Chocolate Cake (Amanda Tan), and Cocktail Mixing (Gian Nones).

Diplomas were award to Janelle Untal (the Cookie Jar), Andrew Dy (the Main Course), and Mary Vasquez (Napkin Folding).

Coaches for the student competitors were Hospitality Management faculty members led by Department Chair Dr. Junix A. Salinas, Dimpsy Bastasa, Joel Catan, Nelson Collamar, Dr. Simplicio Espellita Jr., Shiela Franco, Chef Dave Daryl Gelaga, Dr. Myrla Gidayawan, Chef Shun Madera, Chef Bonifacio Ramo III, Julienne Royo, Chef Bimbo Tallo, and Edrick Templado.
